The Power of the Mom

I’ve been thinking a lot about the power of a mom. If you influence the mother of the household then you’ve influenced the house in my book. I’ve got to think more about this, but over coffee this morning with Kristin from The Manic Mommies podcast I was really amazed at what they are up to.

They’ve got a loyal fan base and have had some success with sponsorships. Full disclosure that several months back we connected them with our client Yes to Carrots for a sponsorship as well. It was great to help make that happen since Kristin & Erin have become friends through the New England Podcasting community.

What blew me away is that they have this whole Mommies Escape Weekend planned. I first heard about it from my wife when she told me not to plan anything that weekend because she was going. I don’t listen to the show so I didn’t know what she was talking about. But, they have taken their brand and are extending it out into an event. That’s powerful! A weekend completely geared to getting the working mother out of the house and away from it all. Speakers, sessions and all around fun and almost everyone there will be a mother. What brand wouldn’t want to get in front of that audience?

With all the PodCamps and unconferences happening out there I’m always excited to see different spins on the same old conference. The days of paying a thousand dollars to go and listen to the same stuffy shirts talk about the same boring things is dying. People keep going to them, but it is changing and evolving just like everything else in this space.

Lots of excitement. Excitement for friends. Excitement for the evolution of a brand. Excitement for how every day I hear about something new that makes me smile!

Virtual Branding Session a Success!

Virtual Branding Panel

The first of the crayon speakers series took place today and the topic was “virtual branding.”

We had such a great turn out that the sim was full and we had to turn some people away who asked to attend at the last minute. As discussed at the event we will have audio and and a transcript from the event shortly. If you’d like to be one of the first people to hear the audio I suggest subscribing to crayonCast as that is where you’ll be able to hear it before anywhere else.

What If Real Life Were More Like Second Life?

I’ve got to hand it to DraftFCB. This is a clever video that captures the essence of the experience – at least for SL novices.

More about the discussion topic:
It seems as if we’ve come full circle when it comes to Virtual Worlds, led by its poster child – Second Life. First the hype and promise, then the skepticism and critique and now, the next wave of Web 3.d or 3.0 – the experience Web. What is real and what is not? How are brands such as Coca-Cola, iVillage and Pontiac approaching Virtual branding? What are the insights, learnings and pitfalls of brand building in an otherwise clutter-free and pure economy? How does one avoid flying genitalia? What are the key metrics geared to help guide you on your virtual journey?

Join the conversation on Tuesday, June 26th.

Schedule:
12 noon EST – Panel Discussion
1 pm – Questions and Answers
1.30 pm – Panel close and socializing

Michael Moore, Marketing Genius?

Here’s an article from Brandweek about how Michael Moore is kosher about the leakage of his new movie Sicko.

I have another theory.

I think he seeded out his own movie as the press coverage was huge and after releasing this recent statement on his views on copyrights it will continue to get coverage. Brilliant!

I will tell you that movies like The Matrix get stolen and seeded. The pirating community has little interest in Moore’s documentaries. As evidence only 2,000 downloads have so far occurred on one of the largest bit torrent networks. However, the amount of free publicity generated will certainly drive more ticket sales.

You heard it here first.

Future of Media: EPIC’s Spiritual Successor

This video is all over the net, but it is an interesting look at the future of media. The reason why we like it better than the EPIC/GoogleZon vid is that it incorporates Second Life, virtual worlds, and the future of ‘experiences’.

Take a look.

Cayman Islands Loves SL

Here’s a great break down of usage per user per day by country from our friends at Millions Of Us.

The list really shows how international SL is and some more food for thought is that Indonesia is #2 and only has 8.9% internet penetration

Here are the top 30 countries, rounded to the nearest minute.

  • 161 Cayman Islands
  • 132 Indonesia
  • 130 Netherlands
  • 128 Canada
  • 122 United States
  • 122 Korea, Republic of
  • 116 Russian Federation
  • 109 French Southern Terr.
  • 104 Antigua and Barbuda
  • 103 Martinique
  • 102 United Kingdom
  • 101 French Polynesia
  • 99 Denmark
  • 98 Puerto Rico
  • 97 Philippines
  • 93 Malaysia
  • 92 Norway
  • 92 Australia
  • 92 Germany
  • 91 Aruba
  • 90 Armenia
  • 89 Netherland Antilles
  • 88 Singapore
  • 88 Croatia
  • 88 Belgium
  • 86 France
  • 85 Bolivia
  • 84 Monaco
  • 81 Switzerland
  • 80 Dominican Republic
  • 79 New Zealand

“The average SL user (without regard to geography) spends about 90 minutes in world every day. That’s just incredible. Here are the bottom 10 countries by minutes per day per user:”

  • 40 Latvia
  • 39 Portugal
  • 38 Morocco
  • 38 Romania
  • 38 Mexico
  • 35 Vietnam
  • 35 India
  • 34 South Korea
  • 32 Colombia
  • 31 Chile
  • 30 Lithuania

“So even the users who are online the least amount of time still spend 30 or more minutes a day in Second Life. Sites like Yahoo and MySpace would be absolutely thrilled if they can engage an audience for 10 minutes, let alone 90 nearly every day.”

Interested to here your thoughts.
