Ding Ding – Time to vote for your round of 32 MVB

mvbrd1.jpg

With the voting in and tallied, including two cheaters (who have been paired up against each other as punishment for trying to rock the vote and ultimately set up against Seth Godin), we are now ready to begin the big dance.

The full seedings are as follows and you can click on this thumbnail to view the complete brackets. Jj0000bracket005_copy_9

More importantly, click here to vote on the 16 head-to-head match-ups. Once enough votes are in, I’ll tabulate again and narrow the field down to the “Sweet 16″ and so on and so forth.

fyi, David Armano, in a putrid ass-kissing way to influence his growing following put together this very smart post offering commentary and insight on the randomness of the MVB’s and also the MSM angle associated with it. Don’t let this MVB demonstration of thought leadership go unpunished!

  • Jaffe v Seth Godin on the card if all goes according to seeding
  • We’re rooting for Where’s the Sausage heads up against Eggs, Bacon, Chips & Beans!

March Blogness

I was at a conference last week and a person came up to me asking what I thought were the most valuable books in terms of bringing them up to speed (crash course) in new marketing. I told them instead to think about 5 essential blogs, instead of books (only because I haven’t read 5 books in completion lately due to the fact I was writing my own)

This birthed the idea of the MVB’s – the Most Valuable Blogs.

I invited people to submit their MVB’s and coincidentally we ended up with 32.

Let the madness begin! Vote for your Top 5 MVB’s. Take the survey here

Twitter is New Media Doodling?

I’m a huge fan of doodling. I do it all the time whenever I’m thinking or passing the time.

Of course I’d bet that most people who doodle do a ton of it during meetings. I know I do. I’ve always got a notebook right there so doodling is the next natural step.

I just finished our weekly staff meeting here at crayon and I realized I had not done a single doodle, but I had done a bunch of random Twitter messages. Going back and reading them was like going back and looking at doodles. Sure they “sort of” make sense, but not really and they usually don’t have one thing to do with the other.

So does this mean that Twitter could be a form of new media doodling? I don’t know. It was just a random thought that popped in my head (like most twitters from me) and I thought I’d share. I couldn’t figure out how to keep it under 140 characters so thus a blog post pointed to by a Twitter.

Thoughts?

Why Are You Here?

This isn’t some deep philosophical question about why you are where you are in the world and where you are going.

Rather, I want to know why you are here on the crayon blog reading this post. What brings you here via RSS subscription or web surfing on a regular basis?

I’m not looking for survey type answers. I’m just down right curious with so much information happening in the new media space why do you take the time to read this particular blog out of all the others. What do you get out of it? What would you like to see more of? What could it be? Let the ideas flow.

All these thoughts and questions are bouncing around in my mind so I thought I’d throw it out and see what comes back.

Bum Rush The Charts

Bum Rush the Charts

Today is the day for a very cool new marketing experiment that I’ve been supporting since the beginning and I hope everyone out there will as well.

What I want you to do is take just a moment of your time and buy the track “Mine Again” from Black Lab in the iTunes Music Store. That’s it. Nice and simple. All you need to do is spend 99 cents and 2 minutes of your time to help a good cause.

All of the affiliate money and half of the bands proceeds will go into a scholarship fund set up by The Student Loan Network. Plus, if we get the number of people to do this that we hope we will it’ll push an indie band to the top of the iTunes charts. This is a good test to see if the community we hope is out there can step up and take action when needed.

To find out more go to BumRushTheCharts.com

PLEASE share this with everyone and let’s make this a success!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Twitter takes over

Twitter_technorati

It’s been a huge couple of weeks for Twitter, the tiny little web app that could, fuelled by the evangelizing of Scoble, and the alpha adopters descending on SXSW to share the latest and greatest. We’ve seen Google mashups, we’ve seen top 100 lists, and we’ve even seen Mr Jaffe enter the fray. No wonder then that today “Twitter” is the most searched term on Technorati.

As I’ve begun to play with it, I’ve found both pros and cons. With Twitter, immediacy of information is balanced with a lot of noise amongst the signal, and sometimes it can prove overwhelming. But Twitter has proved to be a valuable tool in thought clarity – rather than having a blog’s blank field to extend my rambling as long as I want, I’ve begun to realize I HAVE to sum up my thoughts using just 140 letters.

So in that vein, here’s five Twitter thoughts, in 140 characters or less:

  • I registered twittercon.com – perhaps a one day conference for Twitterers in NYC later this year. Any interest out there?
  • Jason Calacanis is threatening to give up blogging for Twittering – will some kind of micro monetization format be far behind?
  • Business application for Twitter: Financial analysts selling subscriptions to their Twitter list in exchange for market & stock tips.
  • What about an ARG? Played out on Twitter between actors, in real time, over one day. Isn’t this what Fox and “24″ should be doing?
  • Next time you have an idea to pitch a client, see if you can do it in a Twitter. If you can’t, maybe the idea isn’t simple enough.
  • You can read my own Twitters here.

    Second Life & Books

I’ve always thought the idea of having authors promote their books in Second Life was a very easy win for all involved. That’s why I was psyched when I heard that Dean Koontz was going to be doing a reading in Second Life.

Koontz in Second LifeI’ve actually never read any of his books but I guess I have to now because last night I won a signed copy of his latest book The Good Guy.
This event could have been quite boring, but instead it included a short reading from the book and then a lengthy Q&A with the author. On top of having the audio streamed to 9 remote locations (including Crayonville) they also streamed the live video from the main SL location to the remote locations. So you could SEE what was happening in Second Life from within Second Life.

The books were given away by a slick piece of scripting from The Electric Sheep Company. An invisible raffle machine was placed on each sim that would detect the avatars at the event and randomly announce a winner of a book every so often. This was great because it did not require the avatars to do anything. At one point we had someone stumble into the event not knowing what was going on and suddenly they won a book. It was one of those priceless moments that can only happen in the world of new media.

Dean Koontz comes to Second Life

Dean Koontz in Second LifeSuspense and horror fiction novelist Dean Koontz is coming to Second Life on March 15 as the virtual stop on the promotion trail for his latest book, “The Good Guy.”

Publisher Random House’s Bantam Dell imprint has teamed up with Second Life developer Electric Sheep to hold a live reading and Q&A session, audio streamed into the Bantam Dell Book Cafe in Second Life.

If you attend the event, you’ll have a chance to take part in a raffle to win a real life first edition hardback of “The Good Guy,” signed by Dean Koontz. The winners will receive this book at least a week or more before it hits the shelves. Publication date is May 29.

The event is being syndicated via a number of venues in Second Life including crayonville. It will also be audio-streamed life at the official Dean Koontz website.

Koontz’ appearance will kick-start the “Bantam Dell Authors in Second Life” programme where other authors will do similar in-world events in future.

It’s a terrific way to expose authors and books to fans and new readers in an entirely new and dynamic way as well as build that community spirit. Think of book readings at your local Barnes & Noble or Waterstones and project that thought into Second Life.

I’m also excited about this as I’ve read nearly every single one of Koontz’ novels (yes, I am a huge fan!) and listened to his podcasts last year. If you haven’t discovered Dean Koontz yet, this could be your ideal opportunity, wherever you are.
