Podcaster J.C. Hutchins has killed the president

7S_SpecialPDF_Cover Not the real president and not in real life. And technically speaking, J.C. didn't do the deed -- but he dreamed up the child/assassin who takes down America's main man in the opening lines of his sci-fi thriller 7th Son: Descent.

Regular readers know that I have a bit of a mancrush on J.C., who has the social media chops so many brand managers can only dream of. His last print novel, Personal Effects, was a participatory, multimedia tour de force (learn more) and with 7th Son he does it again.

Now, for those of you who haven't been poking around the social media space for the past few years I should mention that although today marks the first day 7th Son is available (as they say) everywhere books are sold, the story has already been told through social media.

A couple of years ago, frustrated by his inability to find a publisher for his work, J.C. released the novel chapter-by-chapter in podcast form. The series went on to become one of the (if not the) most popular audio podcast novels and amassed J.C. a nice-sized army of fans. And then, well, one thing led to another and now the man has a book deal with St. Maarten's Press. Solid...

But that doesn't mean he's kissing his social media friends goodbye. You can (and should) buy the book. But you can also download the first 10 chapters as a free PDF (available for download across a network of social media and sci-fi blogs) or read the entire book for free on Boing Boing, where it's being serialized chapter-by-chapter. Eyes too tired from staring at spreadsheets all day? He's also offering it all as a 10-episode audio serial that should appeal to both audiobook fans and his original podcast audience.

If you want to see a great example of social marketing done right (by someone who isn't a trained marketer, no less) check out the site. There are a ton of other goodies -- from free prequel content to a killer loyalty points program for anyone who helps evangelize and promote the book.

Disclosure: I am not a member of the points program but J.C. did send me a free copy of the book (no, I haven't read it yet, but I plan to as soon as possible.) I also recently interviewed J.C. for my book (which is certain to be less interesting than his, although I hope it will be marketed at least half as well.)

Now go and get your clone on...

Jaffe Juice #131 – It’s all about the pixels, baby

6pos My buddy, Mitch Joel, just wrote a book. It's called Six Pixels of Separation and it's the prelude to his blog and podcast. In this special episode, we talk about the book, his rationale and motivations behind writing it, the central themes behind the book and of course, Jay Leno. So give it a listen, buy the book (of course) and send in your audio comments to me on +1 206 203-3255 or follow me on Twitter (why? I have no idea)

Books, bucks, buzz and the bux on beancast 63

Beancast_logo_sm_bigger Last night I joined George Parker, Angela Natividad (of MarketingVOX and AdRants) and host Bob Knorpp to record Episode 63 of the BeanCast, Bob's marketing podcast that features commentary on some of each week's biggest industry stories. Even though I'm fairly certain sleep deprivation is getting the best of me as I try to balance my day job and my writing schedule, I think my part in the show passed my podcast golden rule:

Try to sound reasonably intelligent at least 50% of the time my mouth is open. I'd give myself a 52% passing grade, but George, Angela and Bob hit it out of the park. Well worth listening.

Learn more about the episode, listen to BeanCast 63 online (embedded QT player), or if you like what you hear subscribe to BeanCast through iTunes.

The show runs about an hour and we hit on the following topics:

Check it out and give a shout.

Beans, Beancounters and Beancasts!

For a change, I was on another podcast as opposed to releasing an episode of my own one. This time it was the Beancast, which I'm happy to say is proof that podcasting is in fact still alive and kicking.

In this episode, I share the microphone with host, Bob Knorpp, Thought Gadget's Ben Kunz and Make the Logo Bigger's Bill Green and we have a really stimulating conversation about media accountability, measurability, performance based pricing, TwitteRFP, Saving Chuck and much much more.

You can find the episode here and subscribe to the show here (I strongly recommend it...I just did myself)

Direct download here btw (which should automatically find its way to your ears via magical R.S.S.)

Marketing in High Definition

LihdLogoBlack In the past, I've always tried to give readers (of the blog) and listeners (to the podcast) a look under the covers of some of the marketing programs I've had the pleasure of working on. None have been as prevalent and exciting as Living in High Definition - Panasonic's community that celebrates the concept of High Definition (not just literally from a product standpoint, but also as an experience/way of life)

Recently we gave the community a new look (form and function); launched a community manager; a new podcast; a series of expert solution videos; and the list continues...

Now it's time to talk about it...and give you a chance to ask questions and talk back.

So mark your calendars for next Thursday, May 7th at 1.30pm EST for a live call-in episode of Jaffe Juice - the New Marketing Podcast. Joining me will be Panasonic's CMO and VP, Brand Strategy, LiHD's Community Manager, the host of the LiHD Podcast and last - but definitely not least - of of the participating families in the program (real life consumers!)

I'll be doing this via Talkshoe and here's what you'll need if you want to join:

  • At 1.30pm EST on Thursday, May 7th, click on this link and join the call. Bonus points if you register. You'll be able to listen and chat live
  • If you want to call in to the show, you'll need to dial +1 724 444-7444 Call ID: 25133 and I'll bring you into the conversation

It's going to be a pretty intriguing and illuminating call. Hope you can make it.

Quigley, Havens & Verdino get social (podcast)

Yesterday, Jane Quigley and I spent some time chatting with John C. Havens about everything from mobile social software and charitable causes to SXSW coolness and Adam Broitman (it was mostly John talking about Broitman, but still...)  That conversation aired live on Blog Talk Radio, courtesy of PepsiCo, and you can listen to it on-demand whenever you have the time.

[I've removed the BTR embedded player because it auto-plays but the show is at your fingers with just one click.]
